The campus and community activities of Yusef Ibrahim hold it very busy, but the fourth year Electrical and IT engineering technology (ECET) Major found a way to balance them all. In the past year, he founded a peer mentoring program called Student Engineering Professionals (MS), finished a cooperative at General Motors in Flint, Michigan, and returned as a teaching assistant for the College of Engineering Technology Introduction during circuits.
He did all this just after Publish another poetry book and a Video series To highlight concepts in various engineering technology courses. And a little -known fact, Ibrahim keeps a place on the national list of the fastest Rubik cubes resolvers. Ibrahim, who is also a scholar’s scholarly scholar, explained how his peer mentoring program was established and how his links with the arts, teaching and technology influence his career plans and those of his classmates.
What is the program of student engineering professionals? Who is involved and how is he led?
SEP is a new mentorship program led by students who associate second and third year students looking for cooperatives with peers in the upper class with cooperative experience. SEP focuses on the career side of things, because noting that the first cooperative can be difficult.
Our team is made of three mentors and we work in close collaboration with the ECET department. During the last semester, we had seven mentories. I built it on a three -part idea with the first part of recording. This is a personal connection with the mentoré. Then, these are the deadlines and details where we would like them to perform tasks to better prepare them for the career fair, course management or time management. This may include the creation of a portfolio website, the overhaul of a curriculum vitae or the creation of a study plan. We try to meet it individual needs. And the last part is reflection and intention. If you want to change, you need to know what you need to change first. The reflection concerns the previous experience-what happened, what went well, what did not go as well as expected? And then you must intend to make changes.
Why is a program like this necessary?
I think it is the cohesion of academics, career and social that really helps. Students must find a balance between classes, campus jobs, extracurricular people during the first year. If a student is unable to do so, next year is not easier. Class work becomes more difficult and the workload becomes more intensive. You may have circuit lessons, a coding lesson, signaling lessons or advanced mathematics lessons in addition to your choice. New housing agreements or more responsibilities can also affect the 2nd and 3rd year. With so many challenges that accumulate, SE offers advice, information and insurance by connecting students to peers who have faced the same obstacles.
Why did you choose engineering technology?
I love analog circuits. This is my passion n ° 1. All that is closely associated with this, I will be happy to do it in my career. During my second year, after being transferred to this college, I took circuits 1 and I was exposed to a very different environment. We had a TA and a teacher for a laboratory of 16 people, and these first heaps were big models for me. So the following semester, I became a TA conference.
Your website declares: “An electrician engineer by choice and one teacher by heart”. What does this mean for you?
Since I do this, I have gone to around 280 students for whom I had the great opportunity to enargerate or TA. Being able to have an impact on the university experience of others offers so much joy. In this short period of time, my role has gone from a student position to a hobby, to my passion and I hope my future vocation. Our majors have countless different roles and titles of employment, so it is very important to share information and experiences. The ministry has been more and more to encourage this student experience to student – and I think it’s incredible. We can share course or cooperative experiences; We can know more about what we want to do and help others. I would also like a professor in higher education. I would love to do this. It would be my dream goal.
