Boxing has long been known as “the sweet science,” but the term could just as easily apply to the first installment of a new series presented by COSI and Discover Columbus.

The “Science Tour 614” YouTube series explores how science is all around us, often in the most unexpected places, including Jeni’s splendid ice creamswhich is presented in the first.

Hosts Lauren Sudimack, head of educational engagement at COSI, and Sarah Townes, director of marketing and innovation at Experience Columbus, take viewers to Jeni’s house to see how the creamy treat is created — a more involved process than we don’t think so.

The couple learns how Jeni’s team, which includes a food scientist, formulates each unique flavor combination and terms like “retronasal.” are tossed around. (No spoilers! You’ll have to watch to find out the meaning.)

Beth Stallings, director of innovation and communications for Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, explains the science of creating the treat with Sarah Townes of Experience Columbus (plaid shirt) and Lauren Sudimack of COSI. The duo hosts a new YouTube series, "Scientific visit 614."

The collaboration between COSI and Experience Columbus aims to uncover science stories in the city. In upcoming episodes, viewers will visit historic landmarks like the Ohio Statehouse, as well as the recently unveiled building. Archie Griffin Statue at Ohio Stadium and Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum.

“We really want to show that science is everywhere, for everyone. For example, in the Statehouse episode, they talk about all the fossils in the walls,” said Kristy Williams, COSI communications director.

“You can integrate science and have new experiences where you’ve already been. It’s an exciting new way to explore Columbus in a way you haven’t thought of before.

Plans are also in the works for an episode on Rumpke Waste & RecyclingGovernment efforts to make the world greener, Williams said.
