Creating diverse on-ramps for a new generation of public health leaders
The Youth Public Health Ambassadors Program trains Fairfax County high school students in grades 10-12 on methods to reduce opioid use, adolescent mental health issues, and become health care workers community, and provides certifications in these areas.
The program aims to increase diversity among healthcare professionals in all fields, while providing students with the experiences and knowledge that can enhance their high school education and future careers.
Objectives of the Young Public Health Ambassadors Program
Ask students to help close the persistent diversity gap between those who receive community health services and the individuals who provide them.
Provide students with an easy way to explore healthcare careers through courses, alumni engagement, and mentorship opportunities.
Increase the number of trained and qualified student community health workers to help implement health programs in communities with limited access to resources.
Help students from all backgrounds understand the root cause of injustice and how it systematically affects families’ chances to be healthy and thrive.
