Houston, Texas (Ktrk) – In the wake of Mother’s Day celebrations, experts urge the public to look beyond flowers and cards to recognize the real pressures that mothers are confronted.
Stress, isolation and pressure can have major impacts on their mental health.
Dr. Quanta Moore, a doctor based in Houston and an expert in public health, is one of those who seem to be the alarm. She joined Eyewitness News live on Monday morning to talk about the support and resources that women in our community need.

Moore said she thought that mental health care is health care, and it’s a mistake to treat them as separate needs. Science shows that hormonal fluctuations that are unique to women – like those that occur during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause – can raise the risk of depression, anxiety and other mental health problems. These biological challenges, she said, can be aggravated by a health care system that often separates mental and physical care.
To help fill this gap, Moore has created Brain manufacturers. This is a free online course designed to support new mothers while they feed the development of their babies. The course also offers a network of support for women who may feel isolated. In addition, its series of webinars, With women in mindtakes up broader mental health challenges that affect women at various stages of life.
“The health care system is not designed or adapted to meet the unique biological needs of women,” said Moore. “Women are really at the heart of our economy, our families and our strong communities. We really believe that by supporting women in our community, we advance Houston for everyone.”
Moore has also discussed his efforts to provide collaborative care in Houston, who integrates behavioral and physical health services into a more holistic approach. However, it noted that access and equity remain key challenges which must be met if real progress must be made.
While conversation around maternal mental health becomes stronger, experts like Moore put pressure for a significant change – ensuring that women are not only celebrated but supported.
