Normal (25News now) – Only around 35% of scientific field workers are women. To inspire more girls to work in science one day, the Children’s discovery museum Normal celebrated International Women and Girls Day in Science.
Local organizations and women working in science have set up tables throughout the museum. They spoke to children in their careers and helped them in practical activities. The fields represented included energy, nursing, agriculture and IT.
“When we show young people that women are in these areas, and they do this work, then more of them will go to these areas. These are jobs that must be filled. We need the workforce to examine these jobs. More specifically in the center of Illinois, there are a lot of stem in agriculture, “said Beth Whisman, executive director of Discovery Museum.
This is the second time in Children’s Discovery Museum to celebrate international women and girls during science. The United Nations has recognized the day for 10 years.
