A recent PWC study found that a career in the technology industry was a first choice for only 3% of students, and women only compensate 22% of AI professionals. With the latest wave of companies that return to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI), women in technology find themselves at a crossroads.
Does this point out the end of progress made so far or a call for action? This year, the theme of International Women’s Day (March 8, 2025) is’Accelerate action for gender equality ‘. And we examine what is at stake for women in technology, how they progress despite the priorities of businesses and why real inclusion cannot be treated as a trend.
Determine technological space
“I entered the technological industry to challenge the obsolete concept that it was not a space for women,” explains Kate Shaw, senior product manager at Ipaas Company Snaplogic. Shaw firmly believes to make a conscious effort to break the barriers it was confronted with. “Real progress comes from the active creation of opportunities, the question of prejudices and the guarantee of technology is accessible to everyone. International Women’s Day reminds us that we must take decisive measures to allow women to direct, innovate and shape the future of technology. There is still work to do, and we must continue to advance to secure a seat at the table – not only for ourselves, but for future generations. »»
Stephanie Albertina-Wright, the main consultant of the World Cybersecurity Company Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 Shares a similar story. “Throughout my trip as a woman in technology, I faced challenges, from impostor syndrome to the unconscious prejudice of a small number of individuals, where I felt that I was pre-judged or not taken seriously. But I also received incredible support from colleagues who recognize the value that people bring in this area – whatever their gender. »»
Drive by example
While expressing its concern about the anti-dei movement in the United States, Simone Mink, product operations lead to a low-code application development platform BeggarCalled the EU remuneration transparency directive in the right direction. She stressed the importance of taking rapid and decisive measures. “We need more women in technology and leaders must give an example to fight against sexes between sexes. We must act now to avoid setbacks and guarantee that gender equality is progressing. Therefore, it is crucial to keep our businesses and our governments responsible for the progress and safeguarding gender equality. »»
Kams Narayan, director of product management for APIM in Snaplogic accepted. It considers DIWD as an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, talent and leadership of women who continue to break barriers in industries traditionally considered to be dominated by men. “It is also a call for action – to support, to connect, to inspire and raise the next generation while honoring women who have continuously proven that talent and leadership are not defined by gender. When talent shortages persist, we must all play an active role in mentoring and give more women to move forward with confidence. As Mahatma Gandhi said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” “”
Create inclusive workplaces and rupture barriers
CFO on the labor management platform AssistantEmma Seymour, put pressure to create a workplace where everyone can succeed. “DIWD is a celebration of progress fueled by ledership focused on the objective. As a financial director here at Deputy, I am proud to have played a role in the conduct of our company in the status of unicorn – not only by financial strategy, but by defending various votes, by promoting innovation and by shaping a culture that empowering each member of the team, “explains Seymour. “What makes me even more proud is to be part of an 80% management team of women and which is passionate about the laying of the foundations of the next generation of leaders in technology and finance. This foundation is built by action: integrate financial literacy and career development at all levels, and guarantee that our investments – in people, technology and programs create a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to grow, prosper and succeed. »»
To encourage more young women in technology and cybersecurity, we need visible mentoring and industry engagement in schools, says Seymour.
She adds: “It is also advantageous to talk about the major reward patterns and packages which are often available for a career within technology and cybersecurity in particular, because these are generally very good in order to attract talent and fill the significant skills gap. Programs like Cyberfirst of the National Cyber Security Center, which includes the Cyberfirst Girls competition, are superb springboards for having triggered this interest. It is an extremely enriching and interesting career path with many opportunities, and there are organizations that will support a path to leadership and respect the importance of a professional life / the balance of family life. The women leaders of this industry, although limited in number, testify to this. »»
It’s all about balance
It is important to accelerate action while also recognizing the importance of balance and personal care, reminds Charlotte Lucy Hall, co-founder and CMO ZincA platform providing history verification services for talent and HR teams. “Women have so much responsibility, for me, she headed a business, a first financing session and navigating both a difficult pregnancy course – and finding time for me was essential to succeed in all of this,” explains Hall. “Taking small moments for yourself can help you reset mentally and emotionally, assuring us that we can continue to present ourselves as our best self, that we are leaders, partners, parents, colleagues or all in one.”
In his journey balancing professional success and maternity, Grace Ensell, sales director at Western Digital UK said: “I am lucky to have found a balance between my work and to be a mother because of teammates, friends and family support.
“For me, real equality is to create an equitable environment where everyone has the same opportunities and responsibilities in their career and their personal life. It is not a question of ignoring the still existing challenges faced by women in the technological industry, in particular those which balance professional success with maternity. We still have a long way to go to achieve complete gender equality, but I want to encourage everyone to participate. »»
Franziska Ferraz, vice-president of the development of the Emea media owner at Criteo, the digital advertising company, echoes this feeling. “Fierce prioritization has become crucial, and this is where the values and leadership of the strong company can make a real difference,” she explains. “With flexibility and confidence to play on both fronts, this culture allowed me to unlock opportunities and continue to grow in my role.
“For me, inclusive cultures are not only” nice to have “for organizations – these are vital catalysts to succeed. When everyone’s voice is really heard, the whole organization is prosperous. My advice? Build a robust support network, inside and outside your business, and don’t be afraid to have your expertise and your achievements. You have won your headquarters at the table – is asking for it now.
