A woman from St Mary’s, Ontario, is facing charges in connection with harassing messages posted on social media about a couple in Guelph, according to Royal City police.

Police said residents began calling them earlier this month with concerns about two dogs in a home on the city’s south side.

After the messages were published on FacebookThe dogs’ owners told police that people were coming to their homes to yell at them or trying to break into their yards.

At one point, police said someone flew a drone over the couple’s home to take photos of it.

The couple also had several visits from Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) as they were eventually satisfied that the dogs were properly cared for and were not in danger.

A police spokesperson told Global News that officers asked three people to delete their Facebook posts, but one of them refused.

“Off the top of my head, I can’t recall another case like this,” Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey said in an email.

“In this case, three people actually posted about these particular dogs, but two of them agreed to remove their posts when it was explained that PAWS had investigated and the posts could raise safety concerns for dog owners.”

The same woman allegedly encouraged people to go to the couple’s home and boycott their business while offering to share her address with anyone who asked, according to police.

A 57-year-old St. Mary’s woman has been charged with communications harassment.
