In a republican party dominated by President Donald TrumpSenator John Curtis, who was elected to fill the retirement headquarters of Senator Mitt Romney last year, thinks that it is always possible – and essential – to be an independent thinker, and is not afraid to break with the president on key issues.
“I really think that the best way to succeed in President Trump is to let him know when we disagree,” the Utah Republican said to Manu Raju on “Sunday inside politics”. In an interview with vast, Curtis praised Trump on certain issues, including border policy, but warned the potential negative impacts of small businesses and was expressed by Trump’s plan to accept a Qatari jet. Curtis also said he thought that the president should come to the congress if the administration wanted to suspend habeas corpusA legal procedure that allows people to challenge their detention before the courts.
“We best serve the president when we act and function more as a board of directors,” he said, asking: “You would not want a board of directors to stamp the president of a company, right?”
The senator’s predecessor found himself as a target of scathing attacks by Trump after voting to condemn the president in his two trials.
But Curtis, who did not support Trump during the presidential primary of the 2024 GOP, is not concerned about the consequences of the rupture with the leader of his party, who has often threatened republican criticism with primaries.
“It’s a stereotype,” said Curtis, explaining that he believes that Trump actually has “respect” for the people who confront him in “the right way, the right time, the right place”.
“If I send a nasty and nasty tweet, of course, it did not receive well, but if I have a thoughtful conversation with the administration on the way I see something, I hope and trust that he really appreciates this as someone who wants to help him,” he said.
Curtis is also not concerned about the return of the basic voters, not hesitating to praise his two -digit lead over his three rivals during the primary of the Gop Senate in 2024 of Utah, including the mayor of Riverton, Trent Staggs, who had the support of Trump and the state republican party.
“The residents of Utah want the president to succeed,” he said about the state that elected Trump to a second term of more than 20 points.
“I want the president to be successful, and he therefore becomes a question of how to help him succeed,” he said, adding: “From time to time, not often, it means that we are going to disagree.”
In his first Senate soil speech this month, Curtis highlighted the advantages of being “extremely honest” in Washington.
“The chances that the Congress gives real results for the American people increasing spectacularly when we begin to tell the truth, not only in camera, but in the open air,” he said.
The first -year senator said that he had already shown part of this “wild” honesty with the Trump administration, telling the candidates of the president’s office, for whom he finally voted: “If we are not paying attention, we will destroy small businesses with prices”.
While Trump and his main advisers shine trade agreements following the global reaction of his radical pricing policies, Curtis said that he understood that the president plays “the long game” on the world scene, but warned the impacts at home.
“We must be very, very cautious with our small businesses,” he said.
Other areas where Curtis does not agree with Trump and his closest allies range from environmental problems to the value of the highlighting of diversity in war in Ukraine.
“I think I was very clear about the place where I feel about Ukraine and President Zelensky,” he said, adding “(Russian president Vladimir) Putin is not our friend.”
While Trump is testing the limits of executive power, Curtis said he thought that the president should consult the congress before potentially suspending Habeas Corpus.
He insisted that he would consider the movement, which CNN reported that Trump had recently spoken“Incredibly carefully.”
“Make me a matter, but I will tell you, because I judge this business, I will think in my mind: and if it is a Democratic president who comes after something that, I think, is important,” he said.
On another major titles manufacturing problem – Trump’s plans for his administration Accept a luxury jet of the royal family Qatari to use as Air Force One – Curtis would only speak for himself.
“I’m just going to tell you, according to my experience as elected, I found that it is better to avoid even the very appearance of being in a bad place,” he said.
Although Curtis thinks that Congress has “abdicated” certain responsibilities, including the management of the federal deficit, it is wary of the dramatic expenses Berger by Elon Musk and the so-called Ministry of Government Effectiveness.
“We have to cut,” he said, adding later, “that does not mean that we should not have compassion. This does not mean that when we let a federal employee leave that we should not think about that it is the worst day of their lives.”
He also recommended a compassionate approach to his colleagues from Capitol Hill as they weigh how to advance Trump’s tax promises without raising the deficit.
“We could do it without removing the critical advantages for those who need it most, but if we do not make difficult decisions, we will make more drastic cuts in the future, and I do not want to do it,” he said.
Curtis said he thought that GOP legislators will meet in a “good place” with Trump’s agenda, but he is part of the Republican choir calling for changes, urging caution as to the way the bill refers to the credits of own energy of the Biden era.
“Honesty is that we need clean, affordable and reliable energy,” he said, explaining that certain provisions of the law on the reduction of inflation of former President Joe Biden are “real priorities” in matters of new forms of energy.
The republican of Utah, who previously represented the youngest district of the country’s congress, said that he knew how important environmental protection is for young voters, which should be an asset for his party, not an obstacle.
“The Republicans are much better on this that we are ready to admit it,” he said.
