Piqua – Nearly 150 students from the fifth to 12th year of the counties of Miami, Darke, Shelby and Champaign participated in the District Day of the Upper Miami Valley, at the Ohio Academy of Science, which was held at the Edison State Community College on Saturday March 8.

Students presented projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, on which they worked from September to February, said a press release from Edison State. The program of the Science Day has been in Ohio since 1949. Students who finish and present a science or engineering project during a local scientific fair in their school or to a county event can qualify to compete at the regional level.

It was the 10th year of the event at Edison State. The organizers included regional educators, STEM professionals and business representatives. Sponsors in the region, including many companies and individuals interested in supporting STEM education, have distributed about $ 8,000 at prices. Parents, teachers and guests supported students in a huge demonstration of support for students’ efforts.

All the students of the Upper Miami Valley who participated in the District Science Day received a note higher than their local day or the respective county.

Local students included Audrey Flaute, Rachel Harshbarger and Amelia Troller from Anna high school; Oliver Fortkamp, Sandy Lee, Kaitlyn Miller, Tyler Miller, Eden Snow, Sophie Sollmann and Harper Vondenhuevel from Holy Angels; Caleb Lotz and Elias Shuster by Jackson Center Elementary; Jack Earhart and Noelle Reineke by Lehman High School; and Addyson Klima of the Upper Valley Career Center.
