Cornell, Michigan (WLUC) – The Temple of the Sports of the Sports of the Superior Peninsula will host its 53rd annual induction banquet on Saturday May 10 at Island Resort and Casino in Harris.

James “Jamie” Angeli Graduated in 1980 from West Iron County, where he played basketball and led the conference by scoring twice, was twice unanimous from the first team of the first team and chose All-State as a senior. After graduating from the Uw-Stout, he embarked on a successful 40-year coaching career in three countries and seven states. Angeli’s head coach record is 221-136 (.619). He won a district championship in Norway HS in 1997 and several professional titles in the country of Qatar (2004-2007), including the coveted Asian Cup (2005). He was coach of the NCAA year at the City College in New York (2016) and a 12-year-old assistant at Division 1 level, notably with the UCLA (1998-2004), in competition five times in the NCAA and Sweet 16 tournament. Angeli is a successful author on the basketball strategy and is known throughout the UP and Wisconsin for his field basketball camp.
Nick Baumgartner is an American Olympian 4 times, winning gold at the Beijing 2022 games during the inaugural event of Snowboardcross, standing at the top of the podium alongside his teammate Lindsey Jacobellis. During his stay in West Iron County High School, Nick was an all-up selection in football, won a wrestling title and a Up Haidles championship during the same school year. He then played football at the Northern Michigan University. Baumgartner has also won gold and silver at SBX at Games ESPN X. A world snowboardcross champion 3 times, Nick’s distinctions off snow included recruit honors of the year 2011 in the Traxxas Torc (Road Truck Racing) series and later in the Super Truck series and the Baja series. Baumgartner’s book, “Gold From Iron”, struck the store shelves in January 2024 and quickly reached the Amazon charts summit for sports books.
Lesley (Christmas) Delvaux was a dominant launcher at the levels of the small league, high school and university softball. She helped Gladstone Little League to the consecutive finalist of World Series at the age of 15-16 in 2001 and 2002 and was all regions and all states in Sacanaba high school. She was one of the first players to win a Big 10 scholarship (Michigan State) and is still in the top ten of all time in MSU for many records.
Rachel (Folcik) McClure I helped Tiny Carney-Annade High School to win a class D basketball title in the second year. She scored 1,749 points for the Wolves, was a player of the year of the selection and basketball coaches of the year as a senior. McClure continued at Ferris State University where she scored 1705 points and was twice all American. After her collegial career, she obtained a contract to play professionally in Portugal with club Desportivo da Povoa. After his playing days, McClure led to the D2 and D1 colleges as well as in the high school level.
Jeff Olson Was a university football coach in Ishpeming for 27 years, winning five regional championships, 12 district championships and three state championships. He led to his teams to the quarterfinals of the State 12 of his 27th birthday in Ishpeming. He was a state coach of the year four times, the coach of the year four times and the regional coach of the year nine times. He was selected to train the UP star match 12 times and the state-of-the-art star match in 2018. Jeff also trained Ishpeming basketball for 30 years, winning a district championship and trained for 11 years.
Denise Porath Played at Fastpitch Softball for 35 years and played in two state championship teams. She also played in the first Women’s Basketball team at Escanaba and was a Sprinter praised in the school female trail team in 1974. She played hockey on the field at the Northern Michigan University and had a record for a 31 goals. She tried for the Olympic team in 1979, but the United States boycotted the Olympic Games in 1980. She was inducted at NMU Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. She also trained basketball and golf in Powers North Central and won five female titles from Highland Golf Club with seven finalist titles.
John Prokos Was an exceptional vaulter with an exceptional post for almost 40 years, a career which included a third place in the Master Division of the National Championships in 1977. His love of sport led him to become a coach, and he used his talents to inspire vaultres in the North Central High School in power. He also led to the Cross-Country and his sixty-year-old career led the Harriers escanaba to their first class AB championship in 1991.
Barb Sickler started his coach career in Lake Linden -Hubbell in 1964. At that time, there were no high school sports teams – instead, there were three “sports days” authorized by girls by the MHSAA. From 1966 to 1985, she was a chief coach of gymnastics and athletics in Lake Linden-Hubbell, guiding them to a class D track championship in 1983 after finishing finalist in 1982. Sickler was also responsible for training gymnastics in these first years and his own encounters on track. Sickler was herself a volleyball referee and gymnastics judge accredited by the State and was inducted into the first class of the renowned temple of the Lake Linden-Hubble sport in 2017.
Jeannie Thoren was named among the 100 most influential skiers of the last century by Ski magazine and is known and respected in the world as a catalyst for women, related to skiing, anything. Before Jeannie, ski equipment was designed by men for men. Called a “crusader” for women’s skiing, Thoren had the courage to fit into an industry resistant to taking into account differences in female form. His “Thoren theory” simply stipulates: “Women are not small men; They need different ski equipment. ” From the construction of the first ski specific to women with a front binding location in Austria (Blizzard Skis 1986) or by working with Dynastar in France to design their exclusive carve (equipment prices for 2007), Jeannie’s commitment to innovation for specific equipment for women on slopes has never hesitated. In 2009, Jeannie Thoren’s female ski center opened in Vail, Co.
Dave St. Onge I spent 53 years at the official high school and college basketball matches, many seasons officiating around 70 games, including the Lycée des Fille and boys as well as university matches. He also officiated the last state matches for boys and basketball girls. He was selected at the Michigan renowned temple of basketball coaches in 2010. He also officiated football matches for 24 years, supervised by young officials and worked for many stars games.
