Sacramento – Governor Gavin Newsom has today criticized federal Republicans for their reductions proposed on the Federal Medicaid program and the additional nutritional aid program (SNAP) in their “big and beautiful bill”. The proposed modifications of Medicaid and the federal rules offered concerning healthcare taxes would take around $ 28 billion in federal funding at risk of California and could lead to a loss of coverage of up to 3.4 million Californians.
Overall, these changes will result in hospitals and clinics closings, will increase unpaid care costs and will withdraw the progress that California has made by reducing its unprecedented rate to a recent historic hollow of 6.4%, threatening the status of the state as a national leader in the widening of access to care.
The bill would also reduce federal SNAP funding in California to 2.8 to 5.4 billion dollars per year. Hundreds of thousands of Californians who need food assistance may lose it, and this will punish workers by ending their eligibility.
