Generous funding helps operate the system. By counting both industrial taxpayers and dollars, America spends more for research than any other country. The federal government distributes about $ 120 billion a year, including $ 50 billion, including tens of thousands of subsidies and contracts for higher education institutions, the rest going to public research organizations.
