EXCLUSIVE: Tobias Menzies has joined the set of Ruben Östlund’s upcoming film The entertainment system is broken. Sources say he is replacing Joel Edgerton who had to part ways with the film due to scheduling conflicts. Menzies joins a cast including Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton and Daniel Brühl. A24 manages national distribution.
The film is another social satire from the director set on a long-haul flight where entertainment systems fail and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to deal with the horror of being bored.
This project will be Östlund’s second English-language film and seventh feature film after The Mongoloid guitar (2004), Involuntary (2008), Play (2011), Force Majeure (2014), The Square (2017) and triangle of sadness (2022). The last two of them earned the director the Palme d’Or in Cannesmeaning he is one of the few filmmakers to have won this distinction twice.
