The support of peers is essential for doctors because it gives them a safe space to share the stress and challenges of the demanding medicine profession. Connecting with colleagues who really understand can help doctors treat their experiences.
This support can help improve mental health, stimulate well-being, promote compassionate leadership and can even improve patient care. Having colleagues who understand their unique experiences can be a vital source of support and validation.
Support is one of the six pillars of AMAs Joy in Medicine ™ health system recognition programThis allows health systems to reduce professional exhaustion and build well-being so that doctors and their patients can prosper. This includes the supply of peer or coaching support programs. Peer support is a key element in building a culture of trust and collegiality.
