Practice Rebecca FishA experienced professional with more than 25 years of health care experience, joined UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media in July to teach health and marketing health courses and supervise the school in communication certificate and health marketing.
Fish brings decades of experience in the health care industry to its role in school. She has worked in the public and private sectors – nationally and international – for organizations such as Merck and Glaxosmithkline. She was also a principal councilor as assistant assistant secretary of American health where she worked in close collaboration with WHO, the Gates Foundation and other global health groups. His experience includes work in commercial and political functions.
“Rebecca’s wealth of experience in health care communication brings great value to our students, teachers and citizens of our state and beyond,” said Raul reisUNC Hussman Dean and John T. Kerr distinguished professor. “In the school’s communication and marketing certificate of the school, she prepares students to launch hard careers and strengthen UNC Hussman’s commitment to take up some of the most important challenges we face to the public – thanks to effective strategic communication. ”
THE Health and marketing communication certificate is a three -course program offered to UNC Hussman undergraduate majors and minors. In this program, students learn important stakeholders in the health care ecosystem and what motivates their behavior. Emphasis is placed on strategic communications to help patients, consumers, providers and health organizations to meet critical health care challenges.
“When I think of health communication, I’m not just talking about creating a campaign on a subject,” said Fish. “The objective of this certificate program is healthy health communications – Understand who are the main stakeholders in space, which motivates their decision -making and determining how to engage them optimally to improve health results . “
The concept of this certificate program was the vision of the graduate of UNC Hussman, twice Lisa Stockman Mauriello ’91, ’13 (Ma). Mauriello has recognized the crucial need to prepare the next generation of health communication professionals. After returning to Caroline to win a master’s degree in technology and communication in 2013, she became a UNC Hussman auxiliary teacher on a mission to design a program that would create a new generation of health communication leaders. Mauriello was diagnosed with an aggressive SLA form in January 2021 and lost her courageous battle against the disease later that year, when she was only 52 years old.
“It is very important to me that this certificate is worthy of the vision that Lisa had in mind,” said Fish. “It is an important part of its inheritance, and I want it to be the ordeal. I am honored to contribute to the construction of the certificate alongside colleagues such as Francesca Dillman-Carpentier. “”
Although certification is specifically for UNC Hussman students, FISH establishes partnerships across the university to exploit Carolina’s expertise linked to health and health care. She hopes to establish partnerships with the UNC College of Arts and Sciences of the Department of Public Policy, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health Health to take advantage of the extent of the Force of the Health System ‘UNC. In the fall of 2024, students of the Capsh Class of Fish in health marketing worked with the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.
“I was so impressed by Professor Fish and his attention to work with me, my colleagues and the students.” said Tim Poe, director of the TV center. “Students have had major observations and I plan to integrate some of the recommendations to improve our communications and networking.”
The new Mock Health Club that Fish advises also arouses the interest of students inside and outside the UNC Hussman. The club works through real world simulations as an epidemic of Ebola virus, taking into account the way in which various stakeholders would take up key challenges.
“I was very successful with recruitment and leadership largely due to the unwavering support of our advisor (fish) who provided valuable frank advice throughout the process,” said Neha Srinivasa ’27Creator of the Mock Health Club. “Professor Fish is a very favorable instructor for all students, and it goes beyond to meet the individual needs of students over everything, from the registration of courses looking for jobs.”
Fish works to extend and strengthen the certificate program program, in particular by adding a basic course, as well as more global content and immersive experiences. She also takes advantage of her networks to attract leading professionals as guest speakers and to create new opportunities for students to apply the concepts and skills they learn in the program in real contexts that put Evidence the precious skills that employers are looking for.
“Putting to the academic world was a big decision, but I love to teach, and I found that this role was incredibly enriching,” said Fish. “The students of my lessons are deeply committed and bring questions thought to our discussions. This inspires me to know that it is the people who will come up in the future critical health care challenges. I also had the chance to work with incredible colleagues who warmly welcomed me in this community. »»
