Horror films are often a week’s wonders at the box office, but the “sinners” of Ryan Coogler challenge the chances and turns out to be a real cinema of events.
During his second weekend in theaters, “Sinners” won $ 45 million in ticket sales in theaters in the United States and Canada, according to the studio estimates on Sunday. This represents a tiny 6% compared to its launch of Easter holidays, the smallest drop in all kinds since “avatar” in 2009. Le Monde, “Sinners” has now won $ 161.6 million.
For industry, the show proves that the scope of the film has widened beyond horror fans to the consumer public who wants to see what it is. Last weekend, men represented 56% of the public. This weekend, the genre fracture has shrunk 50/50. Premium first format projections, such as 70 mm IMAX screens, are also a large draw. IMAX screens worldwide have represented around 21% of the second weekend worldwide, an increase of almost 9% compared to last weekend.
The original overall film, featuring Michael B. Jordan as twins, has entered the rooms on a wave of great criticisms. And, to be fair, “sinners” are not just a horror film: it mixes elements of theater, action and musical in its southern Gothic environment.
“This is one of the lowest titles of the second weekend for a large over-performance version,” said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst of the senior media for Comscore. “It is an absolute phenomenon.”
Hollywood expects a significant drop in the second week of release from a film. Even a 50% drop is considered a solid number, cooked in film mathematics. When it’s less than that, it’s notable.
“You can buy an excellent opening weekend with marketing, but if a film does not have the goods, it will fall,” said Dergarabedian. “There is no bigger success barometer than a second weekend like this.”
The film was produced by Coogler’s Proximity Media and Warner Bros., which managed the theatrical outing. After a few disappointments earlier in the year, this is the second major victory for the studio after “A Minecraft Movie” helped boost the box office earlier this month.
“Sinners” easily exceeded the biggest competition in the new competition this week: “The accountant 2”, a suite with Ben Affleck and published by Amazon MGM Studios, which opened with around 24.5 million dollars during its first weekend. Gavin O’Connor made the film, which played in 3,610 theaters in North America. The public gave him a promising a- cinemascore.
The film that beat “The Accountant 2” for second place was a 20 -year -old Star Wars film: “Revenge of the Sith”. The anniversary reissue collected about $ 25.2 million over the weekend, with many sellers reported, more than double the liberation of “The Phantom threatens” from last year. Internationally, he won $ 17 million in 34 territories, which gives him a global weekend of $ 42.2 million. It is one of the most profitable reissues.
“A Minecraft Movie” landed in fourth place with $ 22.7 million, bringing its national total to around $ 380 million.
The frightening adaptation of video games “up to dawn” also opened this weekend at around 8 million dollars, completing the top five. Sony Pictures released the film, with Ella Rubin and Michael Cimino, who won $ 18.1 million worldwide.
The victories “Minecraft” and “Sinners” meant a huge boost for the box office in April, which increased by 102% compared to April 2024. The annual box office also increased by more than 10% compared to last year after having run with a two-digit deficit in March. And it all happens just before the start of the industry’s summer film season on May 2 with Disney’s “Asterisk).
“There can be no better opening acts for the summer film season than this weekend,” said Dergarabedian.
