The archdiocese of Vancouver said that the Pope named Archbishop Richard W. Smith and accepted the resignation of J. Michael Miller.
In accordance with the Church Act, Miller submitted his resignation to his 75th anniversary in 2021, but had been invited to stay in office until the arrival of his successor.
Smith, who was an archbishop of Edmonton, was the general coordinator of the Pontiff’s trip in July 2022 in Canada, where he apologized for the role of the Roman Catholic Church in residential schools and then called the Aboriginal abuses faced a genocide.

The Archdiocese of Edmonton said that Smith would remain in office in the capital of Alberta until its official installation, likely to take place towards the end of May.
“By the grace of God, I had the extraordinary privilege of serving as your bishop for almost eighteen years.” Smith declared in a letter to the clergy and to the Catholic faithful of the
Archdiocese of Edmonton on Tuesday.
