Deer Park, Texas (Ktrk) – A pastor of the deer park faces a backlash after having called a longtime educator to repent for what he called an “impious and immoral” lifestyle.
Pastor Doug Harris made these remarks during a Sunday sermon at the Baptist Central church on March 16.
Two days earlier, the Deer Park ISD school board had appointed Dr. Tiffany Reban the only finalist in the position of Superintendent.
REGAN has been working for the district for 30 years, more recently as an assistant superintendent. But, Harris said that his references are not the problem.
“Truth be told, she has a lot of experience and she is well educated. The difficulty is in her morality. She saw an impious and immoral lifestyle,” said Harris during the March 16 Sermon.
Harris continued saying that Reban would make a “phenomenal superintendent”, but only if she repents.
Eyewitness News tried to speak to Harris on Wednesday, but failed.
A change. Org calling Harris to apologize has accumulated more than 1,500 signatures.
REGAN also obtains the support of Angela Garcia, president of Pasadena Educators Association.
“It is simply difficult for me to understand how people can be so hateful towards someone who really does their best to guide our children and our school district in the direction that it must go,” said Garcia, whose two children were taught by Regan when she worked to Deer Park Junior High School.
Deer Park ISD said that he had no comments on the sermon but made news of eyewitnesses to a declaration by the president of the Jason Cable school board.
“As Chairman of the Board of Directors, I would share that the Board of Directors of Deer Park ISD has been attached to a fair, transparent and legally hiring process in accordance with the selection of the next superintendent. The decision of the board of directors to appoint Dr. Tiffany Rejea as a lonely finalist required for this role.
“As a public establishment, we adhere to the federal and federal laws on employment, which prohibits discrimination based on certain personal characteristics unrelated to professional yield. Our goal was to guarantee that the best candidate is in place to direct our district, promoting an environment that supports all students, educators and families.
“I recognize that there are different perspectives within our community, and that the commitment and passion of those who have invested in our schools are appreciated. However, the Council will remain firm in our commitment to make decisions rooted in qualifications, integrity and what is best for our students and our district.”
Although REGAN is the only finalist in the district for the role of superintendent, the board of directors cannot appoint it before the end of a 21 -day public commentary period.
This period is expected to expire on April 4.
REGAN did not send a message asking for comments.
