
Winning team to represent the Los Angeles Region in the National Science Science Competition in Washington, DC next month
Los Angeles (March 10, 2025) – Demonstrating a remarkable understanding of the advanced concepts of science, mathematics and technology, the North Hollywood High School team won the 33rd Los Angeles annual competition of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl on Saturday 8 March.
The team goes to represent the Los Angeles region at the National Science Bowl of the American Department of Energy in Washington, DC in April, where they will contribute around 67 regional secondary champions from across the country. In total, eight California teams will participate. Since the launch of Science Bowl in Los Angeles in 1993, the LADWP regional championship teams have won national titles and have had a placement record among the best teams.
The North Hollywood high school and the Venice High School have each won national championships.
The North Hollywood A high school team, the members will each receive a Hitachi scholarship of $ 1,250. In addition, as a team, they will receive $ 3,000 to bring back to the Department of Sciences of their School and to the Melinda RHO commemorative trophy appointed in memory of the late LADWP and volunteer of Science Bowl. For more than 25 years, Melinda Rho played a central role in all aspects of Science Bowl.
Harvard – The Westlake Secondary School team closed second in the competition and each member of the team received a $ 1,000 scholarship from the Water and Power Community Credit Union, the school receiving $ 2,500. The North Hollywood High School B team arrived in third place and the Magnet Stem team of the Academy of Sciences was classified fourth.
The teams have demonstrated skills in problem solving and time management during practical competition, which offers a different challenge to the teams to be met each year. This year, the teams have built a projectile launch, with the winning device of the team reaching the greatest distance and demonstrating the most precision.
In the practical competition, the Abraham Lincoln Senior High School B team was the recipient of the first Franklin Lu practical trophy, appointed to the late engineer Ladwp and volunteer of Science Bowl. Each member of the team also received a scholarship of $ 750. The second prize was awarded to the Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School team B, with the third and fourth place awarded to team B High School B from the Charter High School El Camino, respectively.
With LADWP and the Science Office of the American Energy Department, Science Bowl was also sponsored by the Regional Action Committee of the Southern California Regional Community, Water and Power Community Credit Union and Los Angeles Unified School District. The event was also made possible thanks to the efforts of more than 100 volunteers, mainly LADWP employees, their families and former participants in the Bowl Science.
Each year, LADWP Science Bowl tests the most sharp students in the region on their teamwork skills and their scientific knowledge in a fun atmosphere using a game game format responding to timed questions and answers. The National Science Bowl is among the largest scientific university competitions in the country and the only sponsored by a federal agency. Since its creation in 1991, more than 325,000 students have participated in the program.
