At New York Focus, our central mission is to help readers better understand the functioning of New York. If you think this article has succeeded, please consider supporting our mission and making more stories like this.
New York is an incongruous state. We will take a fabulous wealth – if the state was a country, it would have the tenth economy in the world – but also the highest rate of inequality in wealth. We are among the most diverse – but also the most separate. We have adopted the country’s most ambitious climate law – but we have not respected its deadlines and continue to subsidize the industries that acquire the climate crisis.
As the only publication of non -profit news on the level of New York State, our journalism exists to help you understand these contradictions. Our work examines the functioning of power in the state, unpacking which really calls the shots and reveals how obscure decisions shape the lives of ordinary New Yorkers.
Over the past two decades, the number of local media in New York has been almost reduced in two, allowing elected officials and powerful people to operate more and more in the dark – with the average New Yorker, no wiser.
We are on a mission to change this. Our work has already shown what can happen when those who have power know that someone is looking at, with stories that have caused policy changes and stimulated legislation. We have ambitious plans for the rest of the year and beyond, in particular to fight against new rhythms and more impactful stories – but we need your help to make it a reality.
If you are able, please consider supporting our journalism with a unique gift or a monthly gift. We cannot do this job without you.
