San Antonio – The city has the green light to start testing digital display panels In several pockets of San Antonio this fall.

The San Antonio municipal council voted on June 12 to launch a Two -year pilot program for “entertainment districts” marked by digital display panels in the city centerToyota Field, Brooks and Port San Antonio. Up to 10 displays would be authorized under the pilot and would be limited to 25% of the facade of a building. City staff estimate that the program will generate a million dollars in revenues per year, the city having a decrease of 10%. This number would increase at 15% if the pilot was extended.

Despite the opposition from public speakers, the motion was adopted during a vote of 7-3. The members of the Sukh Kaur, Teri Castillo and Marina Alderete Gavito council voted against the program due to the negative comments received throughout the community engagement process. A recent survey of more than 500 residents has shown that two -thirds of residents were opposed, and that displays should be kept away from Alamo, the properties zoned for residential purposes and historic districts and monuments.

After receiving comments from the neighborhood, the Blue Star Arts District was removed from the pilot.

Speaking in support, the member of the Phyllis Viagra council said that she was looking forward to involving local artists in the development of posting panels. But it has raised concerns about construction projects around the scope of advertisers limiting urban nuclei.

“With the construction we have in the city center, I do not know that advertisers will see the incentive in what the staff have proposed,” she said.

The pilot will start in September. All signs would require the approval of the Department of Arts and Culture of the City and the Historical Examination and Conception Commission.
