Almost a year after 16 years Ahmad al Marrach was killed in Halifax, the first of the four young people accused in the context of his death was sentenced.
The girl, who was 14 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty of manslaughter in October 2024.
On Thursday, a judge pronounced him a sentence of three more months in detention, followed by two years of community reinstatement, for a total of 27 more months under surveillance of the court.
For the family of Al Marrach, the penalty is disappointing.
“It is not a fair conviction. This person should be in detention forever, themselves and the other people involved,” said Basima Al Jaji, Al Marrach’s mother, through an Arab interpreter.

She says she couldn’t sleep thinking about what happened to her son.
“I still cannot accept what happened to Ahmad, everything that happened with Ahmad, everything he experienced by anyone can endure,” she said.

Al Marrach was a 10th year student who arrived in Canada with his family in 2016 after escaping the war in Syria. Police found him seriously injured in a parking lot next to the Halifax shopping center on April 22, 2024 and he died later at the hospital.
During the performance of his decision, judge Mark Heerema told the courtroom that he had witnessed in the surveillance images of the shopping center was a “cruel, insensitive and loose attack”.
Although he has declared that this decision can be considered “too indulgent”, it promises greater prospects for rehabilitation.
