GOP representative Anna Paulina Luna reported on Thursday evening that she and President Mike Johnson may have found a way to end their dead end The question of remote voting For new parents at the Congress.
After several hours in which Luna, Johnson and President Donald Trump exchanged telephone calls, Luna suggested that there could be a ramp deposited at the controversial saga of days and days that Unealed the house floor this week.
Luna said on x That Johnson called her to discuss a possible compromise on the issue by “limiting the vote to new mothers who cannot travel because of health problems”.
Johnson’s office did not immediately respond to the request for comments.
It came after Trump himself expressed his support for Luna’s push to give the new mothers to the congress the possibility of voting remotely. It was not immediately clear if it meant that Luna was back on her first effort to allow women legislators to vote by proxy for six weeks while they recover from birth, which Johnson initially rejected, forcing Luna to associate himself with democrats and to extend his bill to the new parents of both sexes.
If the leaders of the GOP did nothing to approach this dead end, Luna would be able to force her bill on the prosecution next week using the leadership management tool known as the exit petition. But the leaders of the GOP, as well as many members of the Freedom caucus, had fiercely opposed to this change to the rules of the chamber – leading to the stop.
Johnson and Luna fought for months during the thrust of the Florida congress to allow the proxy for newborns’s parents – an effort that started after giving birth last year and could not vote for weeks. But the institutionalist republican fiercely rejected the effort, forcing Luna to choose the more controversial approach to work with the Democrats.
Trump said Thursday that he was “in favor” of proxy vote for the new parents, separating publicly with President Johnson on the issue, although the president conceded that it was ultimately the speaker’s decision.
“I’m going to let the speaker make the decision, but I like the idea of being able, if you have a baby, I think you should be able to call and vote. I am in favor of that. I understand that some people are not, and I am not involved in the issue, but I did it.
Johnson personally used proxy voting during the pandemic when he was authorized under Nancy Pelosi of the time. But he has since argued – including justice – that he is unconditional.
