Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) – The Fat Boy Basketball League in Nashville is not your typical recreational sports organization. With a championship game decided by a single point, the League offers intense competition while focusing on something much more important: health and the community.
“We focus on the percentage of body fat that will help blood pressure,” said coach Dub Williams.
The Williams team, the Celtics Northsis, won the championship of championship on Sunday with a narrow 47-46 victory against the title champion Showtime Lakers at Goodlettsville Middle School.
But the dashboard tells only part of the story. The league participants follow their health measures together, creating responsibility and support.
“Huge, huge. We were checking a bit,” said Williams.
Joe Major, the commentator of the League, explains that the community building extends beyond the basketball court.
“Make junior leagues, other community events, always give clothing, food training, toys for those who need them,” said the major.
Games also offer powerful moments to families, while children encourage their fathers.
“This gives you this spark as a child to say that you can do so too,” said Major.
After winning the championship victory, coach Williams thought about what makes the League special.
“This is my favorite part, the brotherhood,” said Williams.
By focusing on health metrics, family participation and community service, Fat Boy Basketball League continues to have a positive impact in Nashville on and off the field.

On the occasion of 150 years, the YMCA of the Middle Tennessee looks at its past and its future
Happy birthday to the YMCA of Middle Tn. They have just celebrated their 150th birthday! Many things have changed with the Y over the years. I personally saw part of this first -hand when I was a member of the longtime board of directors at the Northwest Family Y and part of its Black Achievers program. Forrest Sanders has a look back.
