Thorpe grew up in the Indian tribe bag and Fox Nation in Oklahoma. He was the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States team in the decathlon. He then won another gold medal in the Pentathlon. But that’s not all – he played baseball for the New York giants and played for six teams in the NFL as well as professional basketball.

His granddaughter, Anita Thorpe, and the nephew Burke Thorpe remember his inheritance.

“Part of our mission is this – telling its story to a whole new generation of athletes and fans,” said Anita.

“He helped write the salary for the game so that more athletes are paid. We have the documentation which is quite old but so important that it has become president – possibly NFL,” added Burke.

Anita and Burke presented Jim Thorpe Scholar athlete of the year on Tuesday evening to a local student.

The Jim Thorpe Scholar Athlete of the Year price offers a four -year and complete renewable scholarship (after federal and state aid has been exhausted) to an exceptional male athlete who plans to attend the USSA. To renew the price, the beneficiaries must maintain a GPA of 3.0 each semester with continuous registration for autumn and spring semesters with a minimum of 12 hours of credit.

Andrew White is this year’s recipient.
