Douglas, Arizona (Kgun) – The city of Douglas is considering a suspension of its 3.8%attractions, which affects gymnasiums and event sites, for the next three years.

If it is approved, this decision would provide tax relief to consumers.

“With this new decision of the mayor and the council, I think it is a step in the right direction for the city of Douglas,” said Nikki Valenzuela, director general of the Cochise County Fair.

The mayor of Douglas, Jose Grijalva, underlined the impact of the tax on companies that had trouble during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These are all entities that have suffered during Covid and have not obtained aid in the process, we simply close them. So, in my opinion, to say the least we can do and give our citizens a tax reduction, “said Grijalva.

The proposed tax suspension aims to attract more entertainment opportunities in the border community.

“If that helps us grow, why do we keep the city when we could get more special events, more amenities for our voters?” Grijalva added.

While the Corté de Cochise fair itself is not directly affected by the tax, Valenzuela noted that sellers frequently raise concerns about it.

“We get small comments and reactions on how we are the highest. But, I mean, they always come. It’s just a kind of head to hear it every year, “she said.

Grijalva said the tax had contributed to around $ 17,000 in last year’s budget.

If the suspension is approved, it will take effect on July 1 for the next three years.

The mayor and the municipal council plan to discuss more of the proposal in March and April.
