The 1975 delivered a set of career definition to Glastonbury Festival on Friday evening, paying tribute to the group’s past while building a bridge towards its future.
During their first headliner of the festival, the British group made its debut in the brand new staging – instead of the lived house in which they played for their “best” tour, they played on a backdrop of several LED blocks configured around the stage. When the group was released for the first time, the four main blocks read their names: Matty, George, Ross and Adam. At other times, they displayed messages like “the favorite group of your girlfriend” and “Everything will be fine”.
The first half of the set saw the leader Matty Healy Forcing a leather jacket, a white t-shirt and jeans while the group opened with the triple threat of “happiness”, “if you are too shy (let me know)” and “love me”. “She’s American” was briefly crushed with the “I want it” to Backstreet Boys “before Healy said to the crowd:” I am perhaps a rock star, but it’s really frightening and I am really nervous. “”
Never a stranger to irony, the group at several times in the whole has openly folded. Before embarking on the single that made the name of the 1975s, “Chocolate”, Hely feigne as if he were about to cry before saying: “What this moment makes me realize is uh, I am probably the best composer of my generation. What is us right? The words were written phonetically to correspond to the Marmonné delivery of Healy in the song, then appeared to the screen, Public.
Halfway, the scene was dark and a message seemed to announce: “Matty changes his pants.” The group then went out in a complete costume and embarked on “I could not be more in love”, before Healy stopped to make his most sincere speech of the night, saying that the often controversial group would take a break in politics.
“The people who watch this in May – I don’t know … They can be disappointed with the lack of politics in this program and our shows to come and probably our future shows. I want you to know that it is a conscious decision,” started Healy. “We honestly do not want our inheritance to be a policy. We want it to be that of love and friendship. I’m not trying to be too serious, but you can go out in the world and there is a lot of politics everywhere. We don’t need more politics. We need more love and friendship. “
“I know it’s really basic, but if you are a young child and you are inspired, like this group or something like that – do not aspire to play a scene or to be a certain size,” continued Healy. “Aspire to this level of friendship and love in what you do and you will never fail. And I love you.”
The group was then launched in “I awld Wanna Die (sometimes)” followed by “love if we wony it”, undoubtedly its most political song, with a montage showing images of Donald Trump, Kanye West, the difficulties of immigration and even more.
After playing the pleasures of the crowd, “sex”, “give yourself an essay” and “the sound”, Healy confirmed to the crowd that the group “was nowhere”. After the last song, “About You”, an acronym was displayed – “Dogs” – which was also on the drum of drummer George Daniel, potentially signaling a new era. While the final notes of the track resounded, Healy fell on his knees and was crying visibly, finally showing how much the opportunity meant for him.
The group’s latest album was the “Being Funny in a Foreign Language” acclaimed by criticism, which released in 2022. Since I abandoned their first EP in 2012, the group formed a dedicated fans base, with thousands of people tattooing their signature box logo on their arms.
The group is not foreign to the controversy either, mainly of Healy on and off stage. During the “Best” tour, Healy got into the habit of giving up various groups and public members during the sets. While performing at the Good Vibes festival in Malaysia in 2023, Hely said against the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws, then kissed Macdonald on the mouth. The incident led to the cancellation of the three -day festival and the group prohibited from Malaysia. Although Healy intended to plead for the LGBTQ + community in the country, some residents expressed their concern that her actions could cause additional repression of the government.
After the incident, a group representative said Variety: “Matty has a long -standing record for the LGBTQ +community, and the group wanted to defend its fans and LGBTQ +community.”
