Bryan, Texas (KBTX) – Tuesday marked the fifth day of demonstrations in Los Angeles and the The Pentagon now sends naviesas well as thousands of troops from the National Guard, in the region.
Political science teacher at Texas A & M Kirby Goidel sat with KBTX to discuss the demonstrations of ice raids. He explained how it is not the first time that a president has deployed the National Guard without the state asking for his help.
“Usually what is happening is that the state is exceeded,” started Goidel. “The state reaches out to the president. They say, “Mr. President, can you send troops in our own way? Can you help us? We are in a situation. It did not happen here.
Governor of California Gavin Newsom said he was going to continue the president Outfall deployment of the National Guard.
“This is a real question of which it is a question of authority,” said Goidel. “What Gavin Newsom says, and what California says, in their trial, is that they say that the president does not have the right to send troops like this without us asking for first, and the deployment of these troops to face this problem is a problem of what a state is supposed to face.”
GOIDEL said that the president’s decisions could be considered politically motivated.
“So we have a lot of politics at stake here,” added Goidel. “One is even if there has been a lot of visible deportations, the deportations are not at the level of which Trump has spoken during the campaign. So, this is part of it. They are trying to expand the activity of deporting and this activity in Los Angeles. As part of this second, Governor Newsom is a candidate for the Democratic presidential of 2028.
