On April 2, 2025, Seton Hall University Pirates pitchThe annual competition of venture capital funds has marked a major technological success. The event presented the collaboration efforts of the Stillman School of BusinessTHE College of human development, culture and mediaand the Teaching, learning and technology center (TLTC). This shark tank style event provided a platform to students to present innovative commercial ideas to a panel of expert judges and to a live audience in the Théâtre du University Center, which has been transformed into a live broadcast installation.
Coordinated by Susan Scherikdirector of Innovation and entrepreneurship centerThe event highlighted Seton Hall’s commitment to promote business spirit among students. Scherreik and the student teams spent several months preparing through a series of networking events, mentoring sessions and workshops designed to help them transform their creative ideas into viable commercial models.
“Pirates Pitch is a characteristic of innovation in Seton Hall, similar to our own shark reservoir,” said Scherreik. “This year, thanks to the expertise of the TLTC team and the latest audiovisual technology, we have captured the excitation and tension of the event like never before. The professional quality of live and recorded delivery allow students to live the 25th annual pirate land at its best event. We are immense.”
The TLTC digital media team played a key role in the use of advanced technology in the University Center studio. Their expertise, combined with the support of Media Services, ensured the transparent integration of the audio and visual components of the University Center Theater in the studio for full live broadcast. Collaboration with Chris AurioDirector of production / installations of the College of Human Development, Culture and the Media, obtained access to the resources and equipment necessary in the theater.
CHDCM students also played significant roles in production. Shutv Students Emily Flynn, Julianna Caliri and Christine Franco led the effort, managing everything, from camera operations to the management of the scene. Their professionalism and technical skills have highlighted the actual experience acquired thanks to the media and communication programs of Seton Hall.
Emily Flynn, a class of 2026 students specializing in visual sound media and films at the CHDCM, and the head of the social department for Shu TV, thought about his experience during the Pitch Pirate event: “Pirates Pitch was a great experience and a big step forward for Shu television through our collaboration with the TLTC team. in lessons and while working at Shu TV.
The University Center television studio is not new to me. Once we were able to work in space in September 2024, I tried to learn as much as possible, acquire knowledge and ask myself if I did not know how to use or repair something. In December, the Council theater asked Shu TV if we could try to record their Christmas show. It was the first time that we have connected the NDI system in the theater during the round with the NDI system in the television studio. So, in this project, I had a previous experience with the two systems and I was even able to offer an overview of the crew because of this. Thank you very much for this opportunity for Shu TV, and I hope to work with TLTC on more projects, “said Flynn.
The height of the 2025 pirates illustrated the interdisciplinary collaboration and highlighted the technical and creative talents that students and staff provide to campus initiatives. Live on the UNiversity YouTube channel,, The event allowed former students, families and the public to participate practically. Public and online audiences voted for their favorite argument, awarding an audience choice price of $ 500.
“Integration of advanced technology between the University Theater and our Center University Studio, we were able to facilitate exceptional production for the Pitch Pirates 2025 event,” said Christopher Petruzzi, director of design and digital media. “The use of the TC-1 tricaster for live switching and remote cameras control over the network allowed the digital media team and the students’ closure of creating a dynamic program live. It was rewarding to see SHUTV students in action, applying both their academic learning and its practical experience from the studio to carry out professionals and direct the whole show.” Activities. “
Beyond students in light entrepreneurs, this year’s production presented Seton Hall’s ability to integrate technology into a real-impact real world learning. It was a success behind the scenes and a truly collaborative success, which makes it the pitch of the most immersive pirates to date.
