Sutter Health to build a billion dollars medical campus in Emeryville, expanding access to care

Sutter Health is expected to invest $ 1 billion in a new medical campus in Emeryville, with advanced facilities, including a flagship hospital and ambulatory services, aimed at meeting the growing health care needs of East Bay. The campus should open in phases from 2028, finally replacing the Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley and double the number of patients that Sutter Health can take care.

Emeryville, California. – Sutter Health is investing $ 1 billion to build a new medical campus in Emeryville, which will include a flagship hospital and widened ambulatory services.

Development aims to meet the growing health care needs of East Bay and will open in phases from 2028.

The new hospital, ready to open in 2033, will include at least 200 beds, emergency services, USIs and private patients rooms. Two existing nearby buildings will house ambulatory services and specialized clinics, the installations opening in 2028.

Sutter Health said the new campus will be a transformer for the East Bay. The objective is to serve more patients in the counties of Alameda and Contra Costa.

“Emeryville was selected because of this ideal campus – 12 acres, two buildings to provide ambulatory care. We really wanted to improve access to patients, which allows them to get appointments and receive care. More advanced when they need it, “said Tosan Boyo, president of the Greater East Bay division of Sutter.

“Right now, through California, many patients are waiting for meetings,” added Boyo.

Alta Bates Hospital

What we know:

The new hospital will replace the active care campus of Alta Bates on Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, which Sutter Health announced that it intended to close the hospital by 2030, because it does not comply with standards of seismic security of the state.

After the move to Emeryville, the Berkeley site will be reused as an outpatient surgery center, emergency care clinic and possibly a qualified nursing establishment.

Sutter Health also responded to the concerns concerning the gap left by the closure of Alta Bates. With more than 250 California hospitals that do not meet seismic standards, the organization provides for an extension of the state compliance date for these installations with current replacement campuses.

The expansion plan

What is the next step:

Sutter Health currently serves around 480,000 patients, but with the new campus, this number should reach 800,000.

He also plans to hire at least 100 doctors and clinicians for the new campus.

“When we talk about advanced installations, we are talking about advanced imaging care, advanced operating rooms … We can also provide advanced ambulatory surgery programs and, in the clinical space, we will be able to Offer services, procedures and care with the latest technologies to support clinicians and staff by providing this care, “said Dr. Arzou Ahsan, President and Chief Executive Officer Sutter East Bay Medical Group.

The city of Emeryville praised the new development, noting that Sutter Health will become the largest employer in the city.

“I think the very fact that it will probably double and increase traffic to our city will be a very good economic stimulant for new and existing businesses,” said vice-mayor Sukhdeep Kaur.
