Americanus, Ga. (Walb) – The month of awareness of mental health is fast approaching, but the high school of the Comté de Sumter has already taken one step ahead.
Art students were responsible for creating a painting based on a single mental health disorder. Their teacher, Ms. Williams, affected this project to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote a more in -depth understanding of mental health problems.
“How could you show me this disorder in a form of painting? This is where this idea is from,” said Letitia Williams, professor of art from the county of Sumter.
Miss Williams’ Art 1 class is made up of first -year students with seniors. She says that her first -year students are just starting, not knowing what to expect, while her elders are preparing to graduate and start a new life. Both situations can be frightening.
“I just wanted them to understand that there are different levels in feelings, different levels with emotions. I wanted to teach them tolerance, compassion and understanding for everyone! ” said Williams.
An art student, Jaleigha Clerkley, said that the project had taught him that you really never knew what someone else could go through. His painting, entitled “The Void”, was based on a persistent depressive disorder, or dysthymia.
“Find out more about mental illness, especially the mental illness that I chose to paint, it made me realize that there are not many things that I know about the people who suffer from it and how easy it is to hide it,” said Clerkley.
They say that an image is worth a thousand words, but you can always scan the QR code next to each painting to hear the history of the students behind their art.
“I wanted to create an interactive experience. When you look at the painting, you can hear the artist really explain their reflection process, “said Williams.
The student’s art will be exposed and available for purchase until the end of next week. All profits will go directly to the artist.
