What do you read?
I’m reading two books right now. One is Impossible dimensions by Jessica Buchanan; Her husband, Erik Lunmemm; And Anthony Flacco. This is an incredible story on an Oregonian that did a help of help in Somalia but was kidnapped by rebels and was captive for 93 days. This story captures his fight for survival and well -being, but he demonstrates something deeper – force, intellect and overcome adversity.
I recently started reading We are what we eat by Alice Waters. I love her passion for slow food, and she is one of the most humble people I had the pleasure of meeting.
What do you listen to?
I’m stuck on the jazz “rat pack” at the moment. And “Hotel Poolside” for my musical prescription to pass the winter gray. I bounce on podcasts. I have to shout “significant marketplace” by my friends – and the heroes of local manufacturers – Sarah Masoni (Osu Food Innovation Center) and Sarah Marshall (Marshall’s high sauce).
What is your essential gadget?
If I had to choose one, it would be my kitchen scissors. We have a couple for various tasks, but nothing says the size of a bite like a great pair of kitchen shears for everything, from the Kalbi beef to the right thing in a whip crab. My second choice would be my mini culinary robot.
What are your hobbies / interests?
Traveling with my husband and my friends is at the top of my list. I am also a stealthy visitor to the producer markets either, whether on vacation, visiting a neighboring city or in the region. And, of course, visit grocery stores. I like to look at the products, trends and ideas that we could use at the market of choice. I also like to see how local food systems meet.
What was your childhood or first ambition?
I decided to be a veterinarian, but I needed better advice. Our family was always at the grocery store and I fell in love with the merchant hidden inside.
What ambitions do you still have?
I don’t have a list, in itself. I think there are still a lot of things I can do to promote and direct local food systems. On a personal note, I want to make sure that my family life is balanced with work and other commitments. I find it hard to say no sometimes and I have to remember to share my time and be a little more to the earth.
