February is the national month of cancer prevention and an excellent opportunity to learn more about how to reduce your risk of cancer or even prevent it.
Kendra McIntyre, Outreach Coordinator for the Cancer Services Program of Algany, Steuben, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Couties, Notes that Research Shows up of Cancer Cases – and About Half of Cancer Deaths – Could Be Prevented by Getting Screened for certain Cancers and Changes such as the choice of a diet with fruits, vegetables and whole grains, exercise, consumption of less alcohol and not smoking.
“A key action that you can take right now is to make sure you are up to date with your cancer screening,” says Kendra. “Tell your doctor about the projections you need now and which are due in the future. How can screening prevent cancer? »»
In the case of cervical and colorectal cancers, screening tests can find cells leading to cancer. These cells can be eliminated before cancer growth. Although breast cancer cannot be avoided with a screening test, mammography can find breast cancer early when it can be easier to treat, says Kendra.
If you do not have insurance or health care provider, the cancer services program may be able to help. The CSP provides free, colorectal and breast cancer of cervical cancer for eligible New Yorkers who have no health insurance. If you are 40 years old or more, call the CSP to (877) 778-6857 to find out if you qualify for free cancer screening.
In addition to obtaining cancer screening, you can do many other things to reduce your risk of cancer. Some of them include staying on a healthy weight and staying physically active; Again, eat well, do not use tobacco and choose not to drink alcohol or to drink less.
