The Flames preparation team of the St. Mary’s Academy is preparing for the playoffs, although this is a very emotional moment.
The private Catholic school for girls reduces the program and it will be the last season.
“It took everyone with a total surprise,” said Jamie Bettens, who has a daughter in the team.
This elite sports program prepares girls to play at the highest level, with many things that go to play university hockey. Flames are part of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) and often travel to play other teams.
Bettens says that St. Mary’s Academy knew they would close the program last May, but the team was only informed in November.

“Due to the notification so late, we have made deadlines that were crucial for the CSSHL, which handcraft our ability to take off this and mainly killed the program at this stage,” said Bettens.
The athletes remain rushing, trying to find high -level hockey teams to play next season.
St. Mary’s Academy refused an interview but made a statement.
“It was a difficult decision to make for school, and which was not taken lightly. The decision was motivated by several factors, including operational requirements and significant resources, as well as the costs of the program which are not durable for our non -profit establishment, “said the press release.
“In addition, this reflects our commitment to prioritize academics and resources that support our broader student body.”
Bettens says that the team costs around $ 300,000 to operate and that it is entirely funded by parents.
“As a parent, from the outside by looking at their decision -making here, I go firmly against that it is a financial decision at this stage,” said Bettens.
He adds that athletes must also maintain a high academic standard, which he says. The study room is compulsory every day that the travel team. Two of the last three major promotion major in St. Mary’s Academy were members of the team.
“There are still a lot of unanswered questions, a lot of uncertainty and a lot of answers that we are still looking for from school.”
While players, coaches and parents are still waiting for answers, they focus on the rest of the season. The girls are preparing for the playoffs and want to finish on a positive note, before separating.
