What to know

  • A massive fire at SPS Technologies broke out after an initial explosion at the Montgomery County factory, Pennsylvania, Monday, February 17, 2025.
  • About 60 workers were on the site when the fire broke out. The officials said they were all counted and that no injury had been reported.
  • A refuge in place was in force for those located within a radius of 1 mile of the incident and the Hazmat crews were monitoring air quality, but these people were able to return home on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
  • The cause of the fire remains under study.

Signs of progress in Montgomery County as firefighters officially declare Factory fire in the canton of Abington as turned off.

It was a dramatic scene five days ago on Abington while thick smoke and intense flames came from an explosive fire at SPS Technologies on Monday, February 17 a little after 9:30 p.m.

“It was one of the most complex incidents I answered in my career. I am doing these 36 years, “said the head of the Abington fire company Mike Jones.

Now on Saturday, February 22, the firefighters say they are relieved after working around the clock to attack hot spots while fighting against difficult and icy conditions.

“Incredibly difficult. I mean the ice, the wind, we had winds of 40 MPH when the wind took place at some point, “said the deputy chief of the Weldon Fire Company, Jonathan Gerhard.

Nearly 70 fire services from the whole region have helped all volunteers.

“The explosions that were going on outside, you could feel standing outside the building. The smoke was incredible, “said Gerhard.” The bravery and the courage of all those who entered this building were incredible. “”

The families of these firefighters proudly stood as governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, came to see some of the damage closely and talk about some of the factory leaders.

“I hope SPS, after finishing the demolition of this area, will be reconstructed and will remain in the community of Abington,” said Governor Shapiro.

Things are now moving in cleaning mode with a lot of activities still awaited in the area around the factory.

SPS Technologies should now take over and work on the correction. On Thursday, the company already suppressed chemicals that were located in the part of the building which was not affected by the fire.

The governor said that the quality of water and air will continue to be tested.

While many questions remain on how this fire started, the first stakeholders reproduce for a support community and that the worker who was inside everyone is safe.

Hotline for residents concerned

The canton said it was “encouraged” by the support offered by SPS, which has been part of the community for over 120 years.

SPS Technologies has launched a community hotline for “questions, comments or concerns” of Jenkintown and Abington communities, said officials. People can call 215-572-3326 or Send an email to contactsps@pccairframe.com.
