The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the World Health Organization (WHO) signed a new agreement and a new contribution of 5.25 million euros today to support key WHO initiatives.
“Spain has long been a close and firm partner of WHO and global health,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Managing Director. “We thank Spain for its increased flexible funding for our work, in doing so, which helps to be stronger and more independent and allowing us to provide the services that countries and communities need us.”
This year, Spain’s commitment to global health has entered a new chapter when it returned to the WHO Board of Directors for the 2025-2028, almost two decades since its last membership. This renewed commitment is supported by the country’s new global health strategy, launched on May 27, 2025.
This is underlined by the current signature of a new agreement between Spain and WHO and an increasing collaboration between the two partners. At the heart of this effort is the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), under the direction of Mr. Antón Leis; AECID has considerably intensified flexible and strategic funding for WHO activities.
The contribution of 5.25 million euros in AECID to which is part of a broader 60 million euros commitment announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in November 2024. The commitment of several years of Spain also includes support for critical health programs in countries such as Jordan, Mali and Sudan, as well as other global initiatives.
In the future, Spain will host the 4th International Conference on Development Financing (FFD4) in Seville, from June 30 to July 3, 2025, where it aims to increase health financing as a basic development priority. A special high -level event – co -sponsored by WHO and with world health, finance and academic world leaders – will call for bold action thanks to “health funding for a safe and lasting economy: to the Seville health financing program for action”.
