In The mayor’s debate hosted by the WDIV-TV and the mayor hosted by the AARP on June 16Candidate James Craig said Sister Pie, the bakery I founded in Detroit in 2012, “went bankrupt”.
It is an incorrect declaration.
Indeed, Sister Pie has been faced with many challenges in the past five years due to multiple factors that come across. The company has struggled to balance income with wages and benefits, and the ability to grow in a thoughtful way and maintain our mission to Triple Bottom of “People, Planet, Profit” has become particularly difficult with stress and the requirements to maintain daily operations. I know that we are not alone – small businesses will everywhere today for many of the same reasons.
In May, We have largely and carefully announced our plans for a summer interlude To rest, reconfigure the business model and consider a more sustainable future for Sister Pie in Detroit. During the summer, we will offer cooking lessons, respect special orders, sell our bakery products on the Eastern market and work on a vision of the future. By slowing down and taking stock of what we have learned so far, we consciously recommend our neighbors and our big city for the years to come.
