Politologists are increasingly recognizing the importance of public communication, but many feel uncertain to engage with the media. Concerns about being poorly targeted, poorly understood or facing hostile interviewers can often discourage researchers from sharing their work with a wider audience, especially in the polarized political environment today. This short -term course, led by professional scientific communicators of ScilineAn American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) program is designed to effectively provide political skills, tools and confidence to navigate media engagement.
The workshop combines presentations, discussions, practical activities and simulated interviews to help participants better understand the media landscape and develop practical strategies to communicate their work. The subjects include the way journalists identify the sources, how to supervise and simplify the complex results for the profane public, how to stay on the message during interviews and how to manage difficult or uncomfortable questions. Based on ideas of more than 5,000 scientific and journalists facilitated, facilitators will share best practices to ensure that your expertise is clearly communicated, with precision and convincingly.
Whether you are new in the awareness of the media or that you are looking to refine your existing skills, this short course will leave you better prepared to share your research with the public and to contribute to a more enlightened political discourse.
