When the colts drafted Anthony Richardson at No. 4 two years ago, they probably did not imagine that he is part of a quarter-back competition entering in 2025.
But that is what Indianapolis faces this spring, when the club signed Daniel Jones to push Richardson this offseason.
One of the biggest problems that Richardson has to improve is his completion rate. While Richardson was 60% in his four games as a recruit, which fell to 48% during his 11 departures in 2024. The best day of Richardson as a passer was the victory of the week 11 on the jets, because he finished 20 passes by 30 for 272 yards with a touchdown and no choice.
But he also had two games with a completion rate in the 1930s – the defeat of week 8 against Houston (10 out of 32) and the defeat of week 12 against Detroit (11 out of 28).
“This must certainly improve, the percentage of completion,” said head coach Shane Steichen on Monday during the annual League meeting. “I think you cannot go bankrupt by making profits. But getting these completions is huge. And simply moving the channels – instead of being second and 10, maybe take the checks, (you get) in second and 2.. So we are going to work on this offseason and go to the training camp.”
Steichen noted that Richardson knew that the club planned to involve the competition because they were talking about it at the end of the season.
“(W) e sitting and spoke about it and said: you know:” We must involve a competition for Anthony “, said Steichen. “Obviously, Anthony has shown signs of very good things. But we are just looking for a daily coherence.”
Although Steichen does not have a calendar at the moment when he would like to have a decision at this stage, he has a plan to divide the representatives between two quarters. And although Richardson still needs snaps – as has been the case since when he was drafted – now the 22 -year -old QB must do what he can in time limited.
“It’s been part of the process at the moment we are going through, it’s competition,” said Steichen. “So he will have to take advantage of the representatives he obtains – Him and Daniel. It is a competition and the competition makes everyone better.”
