Second man charged in fatal Ontario boat crash, police say

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say they have laid charges against a second man in connection with a fatal boat crash over the May long weekend. accident this left three people dead.

Ontario Provincial Police announced the new charges under the Canada Shipping Act on Monday, seven months after the May 18 accident that claimed lives. Riley Orr, Juliette Côté and Kaila Bearman.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. that day, a speedboat ended up on top of a fishing boat on Bobs Lake, just north of Kingston. Orr, Cote and Bearman, aged 21 to 23, died at the scene. Five other people, aged 21 to 44, were injured and taken to hospital.

It took five months of investigation before the police laid charges: on October 30, Matthew Splinter, 44 years old of Frontenac Sud Township was arrested and charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a means of transportation causing death, three counts of dangerous operation of a means of transportation causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death death and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

On Monday, Ontario Provincial Police said they charged a 27-year-old South Frontenac Township man with failing to flash a tail light on a motorboat in progress, failing to flash tail lights on a motorboat while underway and operating a non-motorized motorboat. human-powered pleasure craft without a personal flotation device or appropriately sized life jacket for each person on board.

The Ontario Provincial Police said the charges relate to offenses under the Canada Shipping Act. The man, whose identity has not been released, will appear in Provincial Offenses Court in Kingston on January 13, 2025.

The Ontario Provincial Police added that their investigation is ongoing.
