Scientists have mapped the atmosphere a planet outside of our 3D solar system for the very first time.
And they have found a world different from everything we have ever seen: powerful winds that carry chemical elements in complex and complex models through the atmosphere. Scientists say that the new 3D understanding of the planet represents a major breakthrough for our understanding of the atmosphere and time of extraterrestrial worlds. But that also questions our current understanding of the weather, they say, because it is so unusual.
“The atmosphere of this planet behaves in a way that defies our understanding of the functioning of time – not only on earth, but on all planets. The planet itself is known as WASP-121B or Tylos. It is around 900 light years and is an ultra-chaud Jupiter, so close to its star that each year lasts only 30 of our hours.
Astronomers were able to use the very large telescope of the Southern European Observatory to probe the atmosphere of the planet and were shocked by what they found.
“What we found was surprising: a jet stream turns material around the equator of the planet, while a separate flow at lower levels of the atmosphere moves the gas on the hot side to the coolest side. This type of climate has never been seen before on any planet, “said Dr. Seidel. “Even the strongest hurricanes in the solar system seem calm in comparison.”
Other surprises came in the data itself. Scientists discovered that there was titanium in the jet flow – previous observations suggested that it was absent, but it may have been hidden in the atmosphere.
“It is really breathtaking that we can study details such as chemical makeup and weather conditions from a planet at such a great distance,” explains Bibiana Prinoth, doctoral student at Lund University, Sweden and Eso, who led a Additional study.
The work is described in a new article, “vertical structure of an atmospheric jet flow of exoplanet”, published in the review Nature. A companion journal with specifically research of titanium, “Titanium Chemistry of Wasp-121 B with Expresso in 4-UT mode”, is published in Astronomy and astrophysics.
