Science evolving the way in which infantile trauma shapes adults

We know that the experiences of our childhood, good and bad, shape who we become as an adult. But understanding what types of early experiences have power in adulthood and the wide range of impacts they can have is an emerging science.

In the 1980s, Dr. Vincent Felitti led a weight loss clinic in San Diego, California. He noticed that some patients who found weight were more likely to have suffered sexual abuse in childhood.

The same 10 -questions investigation that Dr. Felitti gave participants in the 1990s is still used by researchers and clinicians to assess child trauma. But recently, some experts in psychology began to wonder how much the ACES framework identifies the trauma in various populations with precision, because it was initially developed for a population studied mainly white and easy.

The host Flora Lichtman talks with Preeti Simran Sethi, scientific writer and Rosalyn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellow, of her relationships for science Friday on the unfavorable experiences of childhood.
