Raccoons found in Massapequa Park and West Hempstead tested positive for rabies, according to the Nassau County Department of Health.
Health officials say the raccoons were collected on Dec. 29 and 30.
The Massapequa Park raccoon bit and scratched a resident, who received immediate medical attention and post-exposure prophylaxis.
The new findings bring the total number of rabid animals in Nassau County to seven in 2024, following previous cases in feral cats and raccoons in Cedarhurst, Valley Stream, Hewlett and Roslyn Heights.
