A new program will take advantage of Purdue forces in athletics and industry partnerships, offering students access to precious opportunities in Indianapolis

Indianapolis – exploit its reputation in athletics and sporting strength of its urban location in Indianapolis, Purdue University is launching a master’s program in sports management.
The Master of Science in Sport Management, which will start in the fall of 2025, has taken advantage of the Purdue sports prowess, partnerships with industry chiefs and the renowned reputation of Indianapolis as a city focused on sport.
“With an interdisciplinary program and strategic partnerships with Indiana Sports Corp, Purdue Athletics and other industry leaders, this program will prepare students to become the next generation of sport leaders,” said Jeanne Boyd, executive director of sport management at Purdue.
Students of the sport management program, which was approved by the Board of Directors of Purdue on February 7, will mix work in class with hours of internship in the capital – thanks to entities like Indiana Sports Corp, which will offer research, internship and employment opportunities. Subjects such as sports marketing, sports analysis, organizational leadership, as well as ticket office, sales, sponsorships and location will be covered.
Known as amateur sports world capital, Indianapolis also houses dozens of professional sports teams, places, organizations and guiding organizations. Being close to potential employers, Purdue students will be able to experience real world learning opportunities and establish significant ties within the framework of the program.
Housed in the College of Health and Human SciencesThe sport management program will also create offers led by the Science College And IT department. These courses will focus on disciplines specifically adapted to the new program, such as sports analysis as well as AI and technology in sport.
“We are delighted to expand our offers from higher education programs with the addition of this innovative sport management program which includes Indianapolis, a city known for its sports facilities, sports organizations and headquarters, and its main sporting events,” said Aaron Bowman, Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences in Purdue. “The new program will offer an exceptional opportunity to students to learn from our expert teacher and acquire practical experience thanks to immersive learning that aligns their areas of interest within the management of sport.”
The rapidly growing sports and entertainment industry generates billions of dollars in Indiana each year and is expected to increase at 11% nationally between 2023 and 2033. The new Purdue program reflects its commitment to respond to labor demands and prepare students for future success in a dynamic and scalable industry.
Anticipating high demand, the Sport Management Higher Management Program plans to extend to 100 students in the coming years.
While Boyd, who previously spent more than a decade as director general of the male basketball championship of division I at the NCAA, will serve as executive director, Patrick Tutka, associate professor of clinical sports management, will also direct the program during his first stages.
