Pueblo, Colorado (KKTV) – The Pueblo Public Health Department has encouraged the community to protect itself from the Western Nile virus.
Public health officials said that the Mosquito mosquitoes have been tested positive for the Western Nile virus. They said it was the first mosquitoes to be tested positive in the state in 2025.
According to health officials, the virus can affect any age group and enter the body of a mosquito bite, with symptoms developing within two to 14 days.
Health officials said the Western Nile Virus takes place in Pueblo County each year, and that the Ministry of Public Health wants you to protect you and your family.
In order to protect you, health officials have urged the community to follow the four D:
- Draft: Eliminate stagnant waters in pools, ponds, tires or similar water reduction containers that serve mosquito reproduction sites. Change the water in the outdoor pets, bird baths and flower pots every week.
- Twilight and dawn: Avoid outdoor activities with twilight and dawn when mosquitoes are the most active.
- DEET: Porter an insectifuge which contains deet.
- DRESS: If you are outside during the periods when mosquitoes are the most active, hide by wearing shirts, pants, shoes and long sleeve socks.
