The city of Pueblo is expected to receive another series of attenuation of forest fires thanks to a workforce to develop the workforce of the strategic forest action program supervised by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources.
In Pueblo, the subsidy is in the form of work in kind provided by the fire teams of detainees from Colorado Department of Corrections. The prisoners’ crews, supervised by the Doc staff, have carried out mitigation work along Fountain Creek since 2022.
Work has been carried out along North Fountain Creek as well as in several regions of the Arkansas river through the city of Pueblo. The inmates of detainees clean the areas along the rivers of the undergrowth, trees and other plants to make the area more accessible when there is a fire, as well as the reduction in the possibility of spreading fire by creating breaks and a clearing on the ground, said the head of the Pueblo firefighters, Kieth Novak, in a press release.
The work teams of the prisoners carried out an estimated value of $ 205,000 attenuation work, said Haley Sue Robinson, director of public affairs of the city of Pueblo. The work also gives prisoners an experience and an exhibition to the career so that they can continue to attenuate forest fires and forest careers when they are released from prison.
The program “had a significant positive effect on the spread of fires in these areas. The city of Pueblo cannot express how we appreciate the granting of this subsidy for three consecutive years and continuing in 2025,” said Novak, highlighting the work finally helps to protect residents who live near the treated areas and their homes.
