Kingston, RI – April 3, 2025 – The University of Rhode Island will celebrate National Public Health Week with guest activities, speakers and presentations of April 7-13. The events are organized by the Department of Public Health of URI, in collaboration with the College of Health Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, Uri Health Services, as well as other university and community partners.
One of the highlights of the week will be the Pubic Health Symposium of URI with a Dr. James O’Connell’s black addressAssistant Medicine Professor at the Harvard Medical School and president of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless program. O’Connell will discuss the challenges of the provision of medical care to homeless populations. The presentation is planned Monday April 7, 5.30 p.m., In room 170 of the Avadis room on the Uri Kingston campus.
On Tuesday April 8, A panel of former URI students will discuss careers in the field of public health that the discussion will take place from 9:30 am to 10:30 am via zoom And featured the Tiffany Jimenez ’15 panelists, clinical therapist at Ri Mental Health; Sarah Ogundare ’16, program assessor at the Ministry of Health of Rhode Island; And Ana Talamas ’18, responsible for the analysis at Building Service 32BJ Funds Benefit.
On Wednesday April 9Professor Nekehia Quashie will host a round table, entitled “Save the Earth!: Careers focused on environmental health”, ” via zoom. The discussion will start at 2 p.m. and features Summer Gonsalves ’24, an official of compliance in the American Department of Labor, Professional Safety and Health; Courtney Greene ’20 G’22, project manager specializing in environmental compliance, the policy and the commitment of the stakeholders; And Catherine Alves, marine environmentalist, specialist in social sciences and environmental defender for Save The Bay.
And on Friday April 11, Students from the Ministry of Public Health of URI will present their research at the lower level of the place of independence.
Additional training, education and well-being events are planned throughout the week at the Memorial Union and elsewhere through the campus. Some of these events include:
- Well-being workshops which will take place at the lower level of URI health services on Tuesday April 8 From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursday April 10 From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- A “Return the night” Light presentation and lighting to raise awareness of sexual violence will be held at the main entrance to URI Memorial Union Wednesday April 9 From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- A “Promenade out of the Dark Campus“To collect funds and awareness of suicide prevention on Sunday April 13 At 11:30 am
