Comté de Sumner, tenn. (WZTV) – In response to recent school shots, the Portland East primary school in the county of Sumner has implemented important safety upgrades. The school now offers new digital screens throughout the building to improve communication by quickly sharing messages with students in the corridors.
Director Amanda Rippy expressed her enthusiasm for improvements, saying: “We are really delighted that we have been chosen, not only to receive updates and physical improvements, but to see significant improvements for our building.”
The upgrades were part of a global initiative of the service day by Convergint, a cybersecurity and infrastructure company. Scott Kalecki, manager of the Convergint services, detailed the improvements: “We cleaned the cameras, added equipment, installed new video monitors, we made sure that everything that was already in place worked correctly and we have repaired what was not.”
More than 70 volunteers participated in the effort, by moving cameras and installing cables to prepare for future improvements. The school has also received a physical facelift, including new four squares, a basketball target and an outdoor learning area with picnic tables.
Director Rippy noted that if the school district explores additional security measures such as metal detectors, there is no calendar for their implementation.
