Police east of Toronto said they had arrested a 14 -year -old boy and lifted a refuge in the place after a “sadistic and cowardly” stabs who left a dead woman in a TruckHave., Neighborhood.
Around 5:40 p.m. Thursday, police published the emergency alert Say residents nearly 2125 Lynn Heights Dr. à Pickering to rise in place.
The alert was launched after a stab in the region around 3 p.m. when an elderly woman was attacked by a male suspect, which the police said that she did not know. The woman was precipitated in a trauma center in the Toronto region, where she died of her injuries.
Durham regional police chief Peter Moreira said the police had no knowledge of the attack, which he called “sadistic and cowardly”.
For hours after the arrest, police said they had not arrested the suspect, and they didn’t know where he was. They told the residents to stay inside, saying that he had fled the place on foot and had remained armed.
The emergency alert was followed by the news that the city of Pickering would close its community centers, libraries and other facilities to observe the order of shelters on site.
“All planned city programs and classes are also canceled until further notice,” the city said in a brief press release.
Around 8:45 p.m., approximately three hours after the emergency alert and almost six hours after the attack itself, the police confirmed the arrest of a young teenager.
“We announce that we have arrested a 13 -year -old pickering man and that he was arrested by our tactical support unit without incident,” chief Moreira told journalists.

“I would like to thank the members of our community for sheltering in place and doing exactly what we asked them to do. At this stage here, you can freely browse your daily life. ”
Friday, the police corrected the age of the accused at 14, after appearing in court.
Moreira said the arrest came due to the number of officers mobilized by his strength, the Toronto police and the Ontario provincial police. He said investigators were still working on accusations after arrest.
The mayor of Pickering, Kevin Ashe, said that stab wounds were a “shocking day in our city” and said it would affect the whole region.
“Chance is shocking, but overall, we are a sure community,” he said. “We have an excellent police service here in our region. We have very robust eyes in the street, road watches, community watches. ”
The chief said that his officers still thought that the attack was random and had not yet been able to establish a link.
“As you can appreciate, this investigation really started seriously,” said Moreira.
Rare emergency alert issued
Moreira told journalists that the attack had been captured in video, but the suspect’s search was difficult and included a large area.
The area where the stabs took place are the edge of a small subdivision in the northwest part of Pickering. Next to the police strip is a large wooded area without roads, while above, there is a large transformer station.
Durham police said they’ve searched the area using a helicopter, drone and K9 and tactical units.
The emergency alert, published inside and outside Pickering, is an extremely rare step for the police to adopt a homicide or a stab.
Before the arrest was projected, Moreira said he had made the decision to alert an abundance of prudence because the police did not know where the suspect was, and they had no reason for the attack.
“The information, as the investigations take place, often suggest a reason or an index to a particular individual or reason for which this happened. We had nothing of this in this case, “he said.
“And I did not want to leave chance, and we therefore took unusual measures here today, where we take out the resources we need.”
