The official state funeral of former president Jimmy Carter will take place Thursday in Washington, DC, but the public will have the opportunity to say goodbye in the days leading up.
Services began Saturday in Georgia, where Carter’s motorcade passed through his hometown of Plains, stopping at his childhood home for a brief break. After that, the procession heads to the Georgia State Capitol and then to the Carter Center in Atlanta, where the former president will lie in state until Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, Carter will be taken to Washington, where he will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda before his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. The Capitol will be open to the public so people can pay their respects before the funeral.
President Joe Biden said Thursday National day of mourningand he will deliver a eulogy at the funeral. President-elect Donald Trump is also expected.
Carter will then be laid to rest in Plains, the same place where his wife, Rosalynn, was buried last year.
